Australian Active Service Medal 1945-75

The Australian Active Service Medal 1945-1975 was instituted for the purpose of according recognition to those who rendered service in warlike operations between 1945 and 1975. The medal is nickel plated with the obverse featuring a Federation Star surrounded by the legend ‘THE AUSTRALIAN ACTIVE SERVICE MEDAL 1945 - 1975.' The reverse has a wreath of mimosa surrounding a plaque showing the recipient's details. The ribbon has a central thin red stripe flanked by stripes of yellow, pale blue, dark green and purple, these colours being representative of the ribbon colours of the Imperial awards previously issued for campaign service.

The criteria also recognises National Servicemen and those who could not serve the four-year qualifying period because of the ADF’s workplace and enlistment policies of the time. Anniversary of National Service 1951-1972 Medal ANSM-C

The Anniversary of National Service 1951-1972 Medal recognises those who gave service under the National Service Act 1951, which was in force between 1951 and 1972. To be eligible for the medal, persons must have met their obligation to serve under the National Service Act 1951 and must not have been discharged for disciplinary reasons. Those who gave other service in discharge of the obligation to serve under that Act may also be eligible.

The ANSM was introduced in 2001 to recognise those who completed their obligation under the two National Service schemes that had operated in Australia between 1951 and 1972.

Eligibility for the medal is dependent upon a person's obligation to serve and upon this obligation being fulfilled under the National Service Act 1951 (As Amended), as it applied to the individual at the time of his service. Additionally, he must not have been discharged for disciplinary reasons. No women were conscripted under the National Service Act.
