The NATO medal for Former Yugoslavia, was first instituted to reward personnel who took part in the Alliance operations in the former Yugoslavia. Any person serving under NATO Command or operational control is eligible for the award. UK personnel cannot Qualify for the NATO medal and the UNPROFOR medal in respect of the same Period of service. The qualifying period for the medal was designated by the secretary General NATO. However for operations in the former Yugoslavia the period was set for 30 days continuous or accumulated service within the area of operations.

The medal takes precedence equal to the General Service Medal in order of date of award.

The NATO medal is brass or bronze, 1 3/8 inches in diameter, bearing on the front the NATO emblem (a four pointed star emitting a ray from each point superimposed on an annulet) enclosed in base by a wreath of olive. The reverse side has a band inscribed “NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION” at top and “ORGANISATION DU TRAITE DE L’ATLANTIQUE NORD” at the bottom. In the center is a sprig of olive between the inscription “IN SERVICE OF PEACE AND FREEDOM” above and “AU SERVICE DE LA PAIX ET DE LA LIBERTE” below.

Ribbon variants usually kept in stock (awarded to limited Australian and New Zealanders) are; Former Yugoslavia, ISAF (Afghanistan) and Kosovo.
